This is a Frederick Review interview with Katrice Scott, co-owner of Two Sweet Bakery. Katrice is a Frederick native and her business Two Sweet is located in Frederick, MD. Two Sweet is where artistry meets bakery.
Please introduce yourself and tell me a bit about your business.
Hi my name is Katrice Scott, I am a Frederick native. I’m actually a co-owner of Two Sweet, I co-own the business with my twin sister. Her name is Karin Scott. We are born and raised in Frederick and decided to put our talents out there in June of this year so we are a new business as well.
What was it that make you want to start the business?
We just wanted to get our talents out there. We have been baking for a few years, my sister has been baking longer than I have. I broke my ankle a year ago and actually found that I had this talent while I was sitting and unable to get around. Someone asked me to do a set of cookies and I didn’t want to do them at first. But I just went ahead and did it and I had so much fun. I decided then that once I got back on my feet we were going to start this business and just take off.
So it sounds like baking runs in the family then?
Yes, my mother bakes, we were lucky enough to grow up with four sets of grandparents who did a lot of baking. Most of our family baked and threw extravagant parties and we just picked it up.
What sets your business apart from your competitors?
I would say our creativity. We do customized sweets so if you have a business we are able to put your logo on anything. We do birthday orders and we do custom sets for people too. We like to get personal information on the person to make their cookies and cakes better. We’ll snoop around their facebook or instagram pages to get a sense of who they are. We like to know their hobbies, if they have any important things, affirmations that they use, any certain drinks that they like, or a certain car. Anything that can help us make a more personalized product.
If you could go back in time, what’s the one piece of advice you’d give yourself?
Never let anyone or anything stand in the way of pursuing my dreams.
What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favorite thing is seeing our city in a different light. We’ve been able to meet a lot of people and attend a lot of events that we didn’t know were going on right in our city. I also love the fact that we are just growing at a fast pace and hopefully we’ll be able to employ people soon and they can come on to our team and help us succeed as well.
What’s the toughest thing you face being a business owner and how do you handle it?
I would say at the moment we are baking out of the kitchen co-op so I guess the hardest thing is just staying on task of the hours because we have to share the space with other businesses. Then also trying to save money, hopefully we’ll soon be able to get investors and open a storefront. Those are really our challenges right now.
What’s the number one way you currently bring in new customers?
Social media. Once we get done a set, we take a picture to post. Once people are able to see the work that we do we start getting a lot more orders. Social media has really been our friend. With pictures and videos people get attracted to what they see. Since each of our sets are so personal and custom people can see certain cookies and think “oh my goodness, I want that cookie, that’s me, put me in a box.” Technology is everything. It’s how we communicate with customers. It puts you one on one with someone in a matter of seconds.
What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to others thinking about becoming entrepreneur?
I would tell anyone to follow their dreams. I used to work at desk jobs and I used to make the money but I would be so miserable. If anyone wants to follow their dreams I am all for it.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I just want to say that we are ready to make any event Too Sweet!
